Interview with Claire Rivero from The Point SurfClub Tenerife

Hey! Who are you, and what are you working on?

Claire Rivero, ex analog nomad. I launched The Point SurfClub in September 2020 as a non-profit to support the surfing community here in Tenerife.

As an ex-HR director and recruiter who had worked to encourage the growth of the remote working community, I decided to make this a meeting and networking and coworking space too.

How did you come up with the idea?

When the Pandemic hit on the island of Tenerife, an island whose main industry is tourism- we had a severe lockdown for four months. I ran a surf house for 18mnths prior to the lockdown which I had to close.

I saw an opportunity in an ideal location 100 meters from the ocean in the heart of the surf community and joined forces with two friends to renovate the place and open immediately a combined surf club with facilities to work and stay longer and to spread the work evenly within the community

What are the main challenges in your business right now?

The Covid thing is a challenge, of course, cancelations earlier during the year due to flights and restrictions. It takes skills to filter the clients so that the correct vibe is maintained.

Our current problem is that people don´t wish to leave which is why we are looking at phase two for the guests being us looking for long term accommodation for people wishing to stay here longer

What is your favorite surf spot and why?

I used to live in San Diego so I have been spoiled with enjoying some of the best surfing beaches in CA!. But honestly? I stumbled across the Playa de Las Americas Beaches 35 years ago and love this coast. It´s rugged, reef misbehaves frequently but catches Spanish Left on a good day and Phewww!

Where can we learn more about you?
